What causes most car accidents? The majority of car accidents seem to be caused by bad driving: driver inattention, failure to merge or yield, speeding, racing, aggressive driving and failure to exercise care in passing. Accidents also can be attributed to specific causes aside from poor driving itself include: falling asleep; weather conditions; road conditions; alcohol, drugs and drunk driving; driver distractions including cell phones, insects in the car, playing music; collisions with animals in the road i.e. birds, horses, cows and dogs.
Couldn’t care less attitude the cause

KUALA LUMPUR: Road safety experts have come to the conclusion that accidents will continue to happen due to one reason: users think it will not happen to them.
This has caused the country to lose some seven thousand lives yearly. Malaysian Institute of Road Safety Research (Miros) director-general Prof Dr Farhan Sadullah said drivers need to change their attitude.
“Most still think they are invisible. How else can we explain if someone does not wear a helmet, fasten their seatbelt and speed.”
He said hundreds ignore traffic lights daily and thousands continue to drive recklessly daily, adding that speeding is a major contributor to fatalities in the country.
Farhan said motorists must remember that they are potential victims and contributors to an accident from the moment they sit in a vehicle and not to take driving for granted.
Other than vehicles, condition of roads play a crucial role to reduce accidents. He said the roads should also be in good condition. As for drivers, he urged them not to speed and instead practice time management so that they do not have to rush on the road.
Road Safety Department director general Datuk Suret Singh said he wanted road users to inform the authorities when they see a bus driver speeding. “He or she should tell the driver to slow down because there are 40 lives in the driver’s hand. Forty passengers should be able to discipline a rogue driver.”
For a safer environment, said Suret, there was also the issue of upgrading ambulance services to arrive at the accident scene within 15 to 20 minutes.
